SHELTERWERK strives to create enriching built environments that are accessible to everyone.

We are a full service architecture and interior design studio. Our process is based upon providing our clients with the tools and information they need to realize their unique needs. Our project history is comprised of work throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Project types include:

Private Residences

Remodels, additions, accessory dwelling units (ADU), new construction

Commercial Interiors

Workplaces, restaurants, cafes, retail, medical offices

CommunitY

Transitional housing, libraries, parklets

Additional services include:

  • Project consultations: Not sure where to start and want some professional feedback, but you don’t want to commit to a full design contract just yet? We offer small-scope, one-off, on-site consultations to help you decide whether to buy that house or get a sense of the process to build an ADU, add a second story, and similar. Sessions are assumed to be around 1 hour long and don’t include detailed design documentation. Cost is generally about $500, but can vary depending on the nature of the visit and travel distance.

  • Permit expediting: The permit submittal process has always been onerous, but it was upended during the pandemic. Cities are still changing their requirements frequently. If you have a project that’s been languishing in the Planning or Building department for months, or you don’t know where to start with submitting for approvals, we can probably help, even if you’ve been working with another architect. While we’re most familiar with the Bay Area, we are comfortable with permitting outside the region and even other states.

  • SB721 (balcony inspections): The deadline of Jan. 1, 2025 is coming up! Senate Bill 721 mandates that 3-unit buildings with elevated decks or balconies be inspected by this date and require inspections from there on every six years. We can pull together the team to help you meet the cutoff date.

  • Land use and entitlements disputes: You may be having trouble with your neighbors opposing your proposed project, or perhaps you’re concerned about a nearby project impacting you negatively. We work alone or with legal assistance to help see that your interests are heard and your property value is protected. Time is of the essence, so don’t wait!

  • Additional licenses in other states: We have the team to help you with your second home or branch office in Texas, Florida, Oregon, New York, Louisiana, or Arizona.
